Allowance-by-age calculator

About $7.00 a week, or about $30 a month.

Common ways to set it

  • $1 per year of age, per week. A popular rule of thumb: a 7-year-old gets about $7 a week. Lower the rate (say 50¢ per year) if that's more than your budget allows.
  • Pay per chore. Each job has a price, so the weekly total depends on what they finish. Small daily jobs pay a little, bigger weekly jobs pay more.
  • Base amount plus paid extras. A small set allowance for everyday jobs, plus extra money for bigger jobs like washing the car.

Tips for any amount

  • Pay on the same day every week.
  • Decide what the allowance has to cover, like treats, toys or gifts, so the amount means something.
  • Try spend, save and give jars, and raise the amount on birthdays.
